Second only to sister-airport Heathrow in terms of volume of flights and passengers, Gatwick Airport has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1931 as a private airfield.

In 1953 the British Government officially made it London’s second airport and development in the subsequent 60 years has been rapid.

Gatwick Airport is now the sixth busiest international airport in the world, serving almost 34 million passengers and 70 different airlines – all from a single runway.

Now a major international hub, passenger traffic grew at a staggering rate – from 10 million in the 1990s, that number has since more than trebled.

Gatwick Airport is located and 47.5km (29.5 miles) south of the British capital and has two terminals, North and South, with the North Terminal serving British Airways alongside charter carriers, while South Terminal is home almost 50 airlines handling domestic, international and charter flights.

Both terminals feature facilities for exchanging currency, accommodation and information desks, left luggage facilities as well as a wide range of shops, including duty and tax free, selling everything from designer brand clothing and accessories, perfume and cologne, a wide range of tobaccos and alcohol.

Alongside the shopping there are plenty of eateries from casual cafes to fine restaurants and bars for a cheeky drink to calm pre-flight nerves.

Gatwick is well served by public transport with train and tube links, coaches and buses, as well as taxis ferrying people to London and across the south east.

Independent travelers also have access to car rentals and extensive parking.
